Mobile Tower Win For Rural Schools

Posted on March 23, 2019

For a long time ICPA-NSW has advocated that schools in black spot areas should be prioritised under the Mobile Blackspot program and it is very pleasing to see that Telstra and the Federal Government have today recognised rural and remote schools in NSW such as Clare and Naradhan in Round 4.

The lack of mobile connectivity at Clare Public School was first highlighted 6 years ago in a motion raised by Balranald branch at ICPA-NSW conference in Cooma. Since then, the issue has been highlighted at both ICPA NSW and ICPA Aust conferences. Naradhan has shared similar connectivity woes - time and time again both of these schools have been mentioned at ICPA conferences and in advocacy.

“Today’s announcement gives our members a sense of hope that persistence does eventually get that squeaky wheel oiled and we look forward to working with Telstra on the finer details of the small cell towers announcement.” ICPA-NSW State President Clare Butler said.

ICPA-NSW would also like to thank organisations such as BIRRR, CWA of NSW, ACCAN, NSW Farmers and Shire Councils who have supported our policy and helped keep small schools high on the political agendas - this win is an example of what a united voice can achieve – a step in the right direction for equity in rural regional and remote areas.
